Semester: AY17/18 Sem I
Professor(s): Anuradha Ramanujan
Workload: Manageable to Heavy
Overall: I overall enjoyed this module as a whole and felt like I learnt a lot. I think Prof Anu is really good at facilitating class discussions. The topics covered in class were also very interesting for me. Though, the readings are on the heavier side for a 1k level module. We were also expected to come in prepared and ready to discuss which means that we need to do our readings, annotate it and be prepared to share. I really enjoyed class discussion for this course as I felt like it was very constructive and people built on each other’s knowledge. The class also taught me to speak up more. Due to small class size, I managed to make friends with some of my classmates. As there was quite a few CAPT and RC4 students, we would often go for breakfast together before class :”)
Assignments: This course is 100% CA just like many other UTCP mods. You have to submit 3 assignments with increasingly higher weightage. The first assignment was a reflective summary, the second was a comparative essay and the final assignment was an expository essay. The first assignment was mostly combining reflection with summarising skills and apply them to chosen readings. The second one had the class comparing 2 readings and the last one was more or less a research paper on a topic related to food politics. The assignments here are meant to teach UTCP students different writing skills. There is also an emphasis on the rules of academic writing such as making us know how to not plagarise.
Exams: No Exams.
Professor(s): I really like Prof Anu. She is friendly, approachable and conducted classes really well. I felt like I also learnt a lot from Prof Anu throughout the course.
Tutorials: All seminar classes.
Recommend? I would recommend this as a an IEM 1 course. It is interesting and is taught by a very good professor.
