UTW2001K Public Memory, Identity and Rhetoric Review

gek

Updated: Aug 8, 2020

Semester: AY18/19 Sem II

Professor(s): Patrick Wade

Workload: Heavy

Overall: It was not the easiest course but I generally enjoyed the process. I picked a topic that I was personally interested in for my research paper so I think that helped quite a lot. I also choose the topic in such a way that I knew I would be able to find respondents/participants for my fieldwork so that really helped too. I found the readings for this course to be generally quite interesting too. A lot of the readings were related to Singapore’s history and heritage in some way. I remember the first few readings being very theoretical and rather hard to understand but it got better after that. We were also expected to lead a class discussion at least once. Overall, a decent course to take for IEM 2.

Assignments: Most of the grade for this course comes from 3 major assignments (around 80%). And the rest will be peer review and participation. The 3 major assignments – annotated bibliography, research proposal and research paper – generally focuses on your chosen topic and the first 2 assignments build up towards the final research paper. Annotated bibliography is finding sources for your chosen topic and explaining why it will be useful. The research proposal is pretty much a skeleton of your research paper. So writing a good research proposal really helps when it comes to writing the research paper. The research paper required more work such as surveys, fieldwork and observation etc so you should be prepared for it. The research paper could be an enjoyable process if you really like the topic. Not the easiest process tho especially if you have never written a long(er) research paper before as the final research paper was around 2.5k words long.

Exams: No exams.

Professor(s): I generally liked Prof Wade. He is a friendly and approachable guy. He also pretty good at facilitating class discussion. The only complain I would have for Prof Wade is that he returned our 1st assignment so late (even after we submitted our 2nd assignment) which means that we did the 2nd assignment without feedback/knowing what he was looking out for. Apparently, he is normally better than this.

Tutorials: All seminar classes.

Recommend? It’s definitely an IEM 2 module to consider if you like history/heritage topics. The professor is also decent and generally helpful.
